Personal things and potential over-shares.
Rogue Impressions

Melissa has been grooving on the jewelry thing for a couple of years now. It’s an activity she enjoys, both the design/layout/planning and the actual act of putting it all together. Which is a good thing, even though it removes an entire category of things I can safely buy for her. Well, she now has more than any single non-rap “singer” can reasonably wear in a lifetime so instead of despair and waste, she has begun offering her skill to the masses. Or to discerning individuals at any rate. You can view her shop at Etsy, Rogue Impressions, if you want...

Camping

I gripe about it enough that most people know that Melissa and I are not fans of camping. Unfortunately, we are a small minority with our family and friends so we end up doing our share of it. This year, we’ve managed to keep our camping commitments to a single outing to Cherry Campground near Springville, UT. I brought a camera. As has happened in prior posts, I choose to share. This time, I’m using a photo sharing site so that you can click the images and choose how big you want to see the photos. Not many photo hosting sites...

The Outdoorsman

We had a family dinner/weblos activity tonight. Since I had my new toy, I thought I’d share the results. The kids were completing their Outdoorsman Badge or something and that involved putting a pack together and putting up a tent and cooking an outdoor meal. I arrived late, so all I really have is the tent stuff. Starting Out ...

Me Meme

My mom wrote me an email recently saying that she missed reading my blog. Things have been sparse here lately, so I think I’ll crib one of those TMI memes from a friend of mine. In five words, explain what ended your last friendship? Not on last one yet. How was your prom night? It was good. I went with a girl I haven’t heard from since graduation. It was a “friends solve mutual problem” situation. Do you have any famous relatives? Not really. Had one fall off the Mayflower, but that’s...

Book Geek

I always perk up when I see a list of books. A friend recently posted an interesting blog entry with a list of books with the challenge to highlight those she had read. I was all set to follow her example when the question occurred to me: “who the heck made this list?” What followed was an interesting diversion in random weirdness. It started when I tracked down the original claim made by someone named Jill that “The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they’ve printed.” This...

Tagged!

Well, Jannalee tagged me so I’ll respond, I guess. Um. Am I a procrastinator? Lessee, I meant to respond when I first read her post and that was very nearly a month ago. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that I qualify. What do I win? I’m not a fan of these meme things as a general rule, so I’ll refrain from tagging others. Unless someone wants to be tagged... Being Dad

One of the joys of parenting is having the opportunity to mess with your children. I always wanted to be like Calvin’s dad (from Calvin & Hobbes) when my children were young, for example. It’s no wonder Calvin has such a unique perspective on reality when his dad explains that the sun is really only the size of a quarter and that we know how much weight bridges can take by driving progressively heavier trucks over them until they fall down. But that only lasts while they’re still gullible young. Entertaining Young Persons I’m discovering a...

Greener Pastures

Okay, that was way too easy. If you were quick enough to catch the small warning post I put up before the change you can rest easy, uncross the fingers, and put the chicken down. It looks like we migrated seemlessly. And in case you're wondering what happened, I'll explain a bit. My previous web host had an outage last week. They were pretty uncommunicative during the outage, referring all trouble tickets to a forum post that was a one-sentence "we're working on it" kind of post. After more than 24 hours, they finally updated that with "it should be fixed...

A Neutral Good Human Wizard

Yet another goofy quiz. This one was longer than most, but then, it had more to do.I Am A: Neutral Good Human Wizard (6th Level) Ability Scores:Strength-12Dexterity-16Constitution-12Intelligence-16Wisdom-15Charisma-16 Alignment:Neutral Good A neutral good character does the best that a good person can do. He is devoted to helping others. He works with kings and magistrates but does not feel beholden to them. Neutral good is the best alignment you can be because it means doing what is good without bias for or against order. However, neutral good can be a dangerous alignment because because it advances mediocrity by limiting the actions...

Look Ma, I'm Famous

Two developments in two different life aspects both went live today. On a personal level, an article by a friend of mine in an online gaming magazine mentions me by name. Also, I’m the one with the post-digested d6, though I think it was my sister and not daughter who did the not-quite-digesting. I say "I think" because my memory is truly terrible and I’m never sure about anything that happened that long ago (even the interesting stuff). Second, on a professional level, I recently joined a jolly band of rogue developers on a relatively new group blog called The...

A friend mentioned a couple of those irresistible internet quizzes that I can’t seem to pass by. I actually figured out after the fact that I have already taken the second one. Interestingly, I got the same result (more or less) this time as last time. Go figure. Your results:You are Batman Batman 70% The Flash 70% Superman 65% Iron Man 65% Supergirl 63% Spider-Man 60% Robin ...

Kitten School of Hard Knocks

I know everyone is dying to know how Miles is doing. Well, for starters, it turns out that he’s actually a she. Fortunately, she doesn’t seem to be at all offended at the sex change. Her future mama decided that a name change is also called for and thought that Milee might be appropriate. I’m not sure what you get when you cross Miles Vorkosigan with a god of war, but hey, she’s the one that has to live with the result. Milee is doing very well and has turned her ample energy to tormenting fighting tips out of Art...

Dear Tooth Fairy

I take a risk in posting this because I don’t want it to get back to Cordy and I know some of my older kids might see it. I rely on their discretion. I hope they have some. At any rate, inspired by the book Dear Tooth Fairy (and largely copied from it), Cordelia decided she had found a great idea and wrote two letters she dutifully gave her mother this morning. I share the results with you here. (Clicking them will bring up a larger version.) Technorati tags: Personal, Family, Tooth Fairy

Miles to Go

The main occupation of the family these days is the arrival of a bedraggled kitten. When found, he was barely two weeks old. A neighbor boy found him in a ditch that is now likely haunted by the ghosts of his siblings. He brought the poor thing to us. It’s flattering that we’re known in the neighborhood as people who can take care of distraught animals, actually (and will). Anyway, the veterinarian told us that he had only about a 50% chance of survival, particularly as he had an infection that could turn out to be...

What's in a Name?

When I was born, the most popular baby name in the United States* was Michael. Indeed, with the exception of 1960 (when David briefly took the number one spot), Michael was the number one baby name from 1954 to 1998. When I was born, my own name, Jacob, was pretty rare. That year, it broke into the top 300 at number 297 (with a bullet, as it turns out). I bring this up because it meant that I rarely met anyone else named Jacob. As a result, I never gained any real filter for my name—no double check to make...

Dad's Lawn Mowing Tips

My oldest daughters are to the point now where they are large enough (physically) to mow the lawn. I actually had to put off this next stage in molding my children into proper minions because Teleri is such a shrimp. Since her sister Aerin takes after her mother's side of the family and is larger than her older sister, this means that I get to train two future henchgirls for the price of one. In that spirit, here are the three main tips for lawn mowing efficiency. A square is by far the easiest shape to mow. Since...

Please Don't Feed the Leeches

Every organism has parasites. Institutionally, organizations have them as well. You've probably seen them at companies that you work for or at churches where you worship. Maybe we need a different word for them, but their function is simple enough—like any parasite, they sap the strength of their host to fulfill their own selfish needs. And before the contrarians speak up, I'm not talking about symbiosis here, either. You get that, too, but at least with the symbiots, you get some value in return. The distinguishing feature of the parasites are that they take without giving anything of value...

Last Post Ever

Hypothetically speaking-of course. It's the latest blog meme and I got tagged early this time by Eeps Meeps and Ipes. The Blog Apocalypse asks you to image what you'd post if you knew ahead of time that it'd be your last post ever. Now, I'm a relatively introspective person in general, but I'm not a huge fan of introspecting on demand. What I'd post about would probably depend on the reason why it was meant to be the last blog post ever. My goal would be to look forward. I'd spend time spelling out the remaining things I regret but be careful to...

Oversharing Made Easy

I've always been one to jump on technology bandwagons early. The latest is Twitter. It's a logical step up from Instant Messaging in the same way that blogging is a step up from email—a broadcast, single update push protocol with subscriber opt-in. In its way, this is brilliant. Still, you gotta wonder about a service that has it's subscribers calling themselves Twits... follow RabidPaladin at http://twitter.com Technorati tags: Twitter, Personal, Exhibitionism
